Doula is a Greek word referring to a woman who is a caregiver. It has come to refer to a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, intellectual and emotional support to the birthing family before, during and just after childbirth. A labor coach, not a medical practitioner. Sign up for our free newsletter!

WHAT IS A MONITRICE?
A DOULA WITH A GOOD DOSE OF PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE,
EXPERIENCE AND SKILL.
The monitrice is a doula with a lot more advanced training in monitoring baby and mother (ex. checking vitals, dilation and baby fetal heart tones), while mom labors in the house before going to the hospital.
Once you are ready to go to the hospital the monitrice goes with you as the doula now.
Manny women choose to labor at home for different reasons, but the most common is they don't want to go to the hospital until their labor is well under way. This can be especially important for women wanting a Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC) because they are typically asked to come to the hospital as soon as labor starts.
As your Monitrice, I can be the gap between laboring at home alone or spending many needless hours in early labor in the hospital bed with fetal heart monitors attached constantly, an IV, a blood pressure cuff and forbidden to eat and drink or move around as you wish. Every bit of research shows that a physiological labor helps expedite a natural birth. That doesn't happen in a hospital.
Create your ideal birth; I am here to help.
What if an emergency arises at home?
I provide much more than the basic knowledge and experience most doulas offer. Because I am a Licensed & Certified Professional Midwife attending births since 2005, I'm able to recognize and react to emergencies that can arise during labor. I'm able to detect and correct the problem or get you and the baby to the hospital quickly, whether that is in your car or, in the case of an extreme emergency, via EMS.
If 911 are called, I'm able to communicate effectively with the EMTs (ambulance) and with Labor & Delivery, using proper medical terms and explaining the situation in detail. Being clear helps the hospital staff be ready for your specific emergency.
Since I am so familiar with labor and birth, I can quickly recognize when things move out of the realm of normal. I do not wait to do something about a problem until the situation is critical, but know that early action can save a life. Because we're out of the hospital, that early detection is crucial and getting you and the baby to safety is an absolute priority of mine. I am also certified in Neonatal resuscitation and also CPR.
When we move to the hospital will share the information with nurse or doctor with your permission only. Only so they are aware you were well taken care of at home before you arrived.
Together, we will work out the details about when you want to go to the hospital. For some women, it's a certain dilation number, for others, it is when they feel they are ready for an epidural. You decide when to go in... Unless there is a medical reason to go in earlier or if I see you are getting close to pushing.
PLEASE NOTE: It is extremely important to me that you get to the hospital in enough time to deliver your baby. I will not, under any circumstances, keep you at home longer than you want (or need) and only in the case of an extremely precipitous birth, would I deliver the baby at home. While I do have an emergency birth kit in case of precipitous delivery, I will not have the proper equipment, Oxygen and medications for a planned homebirth. If you want a homebirth, I am a licensed Midwife and then we need to make other plans, see midwife services, fees and insurance tabs. If you have a precipitous delivery, depending on the situation, EMS might be called or I will pack you all up in your car and we'll head to the hospital your partner always drives you.
I cannot accept clients who might want a homebirth and want to decide once they are in labor.
$1300 (all of the above doula services AND)
Vaginal exams to check how dilated you are as labor progresses, Visit to check if your water-bag broke (nitrazine paper), once you are in labor I stay with you or nearby if you are very early, just as if you were a home birth client. I will monitor and chart your vitals and the baby heart tones as required by law or as needed for both of your safety.
